Die ersten Wochen als Gastgeberin - the first weeks as a host

______________________________________________________________________

The Black Forest Lodge has been open for roughly 6 weeks now. Did I ever say that everything would be a little more relaxed after the opening when the renovation works were finished? I must have been joking…

Well, many people told me in advance, that I would be busy with a full house and that everything would be hard work. You were all so right! But also many people told me that it would take some time until everything would really get started. This did however not prove to be right. Since the opening, the house has constantly been pretty full (not always filled up to the last room… but this is something I do not aim for. 12 rooms are much, I just manage to keep the overview). I of course just started right into summer season. It did hence not take time to take off, but it will all need time to establish a certain routine, as I use to say.

My guests arrive through many different channels and from many places. I am particularily happy that still many family members and friends as well as friends from friends do come and visit me here. And thanks to the newspaper article from (!) April and the other articles, I receive a lot of requests, bookings and visits. Just last week, an elderly couple rang at my door. I actually just came from the shower and decided to dry my hair before opening the door. It did not bother them, they sat down on a bench in front of the house, she got the newspaper article about me out of her bag and started to read it while he ate an orange.

Once I had dried my hair, I of course opened the door. There was time for a nice encounter and a short tour through the house. There’s also a lot going on through booking.com now - I had my first negative experiences through this portal. But on the other hand, I had such positive experiences that you can still book through it. And AirBnB is the burner … I will report more in depth about this soon.

The last weeks have been an intense time. Only managing the bookings and keeping an overview kept me busy. And the household takes much time as well. During rush hours in the morning, I keep moving between the dishwasher and washing machine. While my colleague Marion takes care of the rooms. And of course, the well-being of my guests matters much to me. Plus, there’s always something to fix in the house. I replaced the second shower tube in one of the many bathrooms this morning. But I can do that myself now. Last time, I asked my nice neighbour for help to be sure. One thing that has been a little more nerve-racking was when I saw water coming through the ceiling of my living room… originating from a leaking silicone joint in one of the new bathrooms. It should be fixed now (I hope it so much) - still in good cooperation with the company that built in the bathrooms.

I am, as always, honest on that blog: I feel definitely tired, also because I often did not sleep well lately. Guests came in the middle of the night, and I had to get up early for breakfast. Further, the house is pretty noise sensitive, and if it is full, the potential for noise rises. So I start to worry if everybody is okay … keeping my sleep very light. Further, I have been confronted with so many new situations and constantly need to decide how to react, e.g. if I don’t approve of the behaviour of a guest. How do I define the rules? When do I insist? When do I make exceptions if something really does not bother me? When will I remain consequent? And how do I set borderlines? How do I communicate the rules well? Etc…. in the meantime I also had the first encounters with guests when I was happy when they left again. They luckily all do ;-) And I had to deal with people not showing up…. the rule that 90% of all guest are nice proves quite true. 10% are not so great and out of these 10%, 2% are really annoying. Hence no reason at all to let myself down. And that’ the point I want to make: the honest enthusiasm most of the guests show about the Lodge and its concept inspires me incredibly. So many people enter the house and emphasize how adorable everything is. And they notice different details as well as my story. For that reason, I feel very lucky as a host through all these influences already after such a short time and enriched through so many nice encounters! You don’t want much more than happy guests as a host… and this seems to be the case. The positive reactions give me so much and make me really forget all the hard work. A main challenge for me remains to not let myself stress. It helps nobody. Most of my guests are on holiday and don’t care if they have to wait one minute for something. And it does not help myself if I get stressed. I am aware of it, but it sometimes gets a little too much so that I need to work on it. I will give another report in about half a year how these things developed. Also in relation to what I learned dealing with so many different people ( I have the impression that I am learning a lot right now though all these experience).

The summary for now is: Sarah is still living a busy, somehow exhausting, but happy life in her Lodge. Some highlights so far will follow soon.

    Hallo Sarah,

    Barbara
