Meine Meinung zum Euro - my opinion on the Euro
Nun wird’s politisch. Aber ich kann mich einfach nicht zurückhalten, meine Meinung zum brandaktuellen Medienthema Griechenlandkrise zu äußern, insbesondere da ich nicht bei einer Institution oder einem Unternehmen angestellt bin, bei denen ich eine von anderen festgelegte Position beziehen muss. Seit ich meine Diplomarbeit Ende 2010 zum Thema „Stabilitätsprobleme der Europäischen Währungsunion am Beispiel von Griechenland“ geschrieben habe, ist das Thema für mich von besonderer Bedeutung und ich habe seither eine klare Meinung, die sich in ein paar Sätzen zusammenfassen lässt:
Die Einführung des Euro war eine politische Entscheidung (viele Volkswirte haben bereits im Voraus davor gewarnt) und meiner Meinung nach ein Fehler. Nun sind solche Urteile im Nachhinein nicht besonders hilfreich. Der Euro ist eingeführt und egal ob die Währungsunion in der aktuellen Formation bestehen bleibt oder ein Land diese verlässt – es gibt keinen einfachen Weg zur Lösung des Problems. Griechenland würde aus wirtschaftlicher Perspektive meiner Meinung nach von der Einführung einer eigenen Währung profitieren, da Geldpolitik so auf nationaler Ebene durchgeführt werden könnte. Das Instrument der Wechselkursanpassung ist ein wichtiges und in diesem Fall wäre eine Währungsabwertung natürlich und würde dem Land helfen. Die technische Regelung eines Austritts aus der Währungsunion (man denke an alle Maschinen, die auf Euro programmiert sind) hingegen ist hochkomplex und friedlich und ohne kann so ein Prozess auch nicht vonstatten gehen. Ich möchte nicht mit den Politikern tauschen, die die Verantwortung dafür übernehmen oder mit dem Militär / den Polizisten, die Bankruns entgegenwirken. Kurzfristig wäre das alles nicht lustig, aber lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende. Denn wie es seit Jahren läuft, so wird es nicht ewig weiter gehen können. Und was mich am meisten beunruhigt und ärgert an der Dauerkrise: ich bin ein begeisterter Befürworter der Europäischen Union. Wir hatten die letzten Jahrzehnte Frieden in Europa (und können uns innerhalb der Landesgrenzen mittlerweile frei bewegen). Das sah vor gut 60 Jahren noch ganz anders aus. Das ist für mich die wichtigste Errungenschaft. Und nun sehe ich, wie die Währungsunion für große Spannungen und Unfrieden zwischen den Nationen innerhalb Europas sorgt. Deshalb verstehe ich die Aussage und das Druckmittel „wenn jemand aus der Währungsunion aussteigt, dann auch aus der EU und Europa“ überhaupt nicht. Wenn der Fall des Austritts eines Landes aus der Währungsunion nicht rechtlich geregelt ist, dann sollte schnell eine Regelung geschaffen werden. Zum Erhalt des langfristigen Friedens, des Miteinanders und der Union in Europa. Und wo gemeinschaftliche Regelungen (egal ob Währung, Gesetze etc.) zu Unmut und einem Gegeneinander der Nationen führen, dann braucht es diese nicht. Auch wenn der Weg aus der gemeinsamen Währungsunion keinesfalls einfach ist, vielleicht sollte er besser sofort umgesetzt werden. Für ein friedliches Europa in Zukunft.

Let’s talk politics. I can’t hold myself back to shout out my opinion on the late-breaking topic in the media: the crisis in Greece. Especially given the fact, that I am not employed at an instutuion or company where I have to adopt a position defined by others. Since I have been writing my diploma thesis in 2010 about „stability problems in the European Monetary Union at the example of Greece“, this subject is of particular importance to me, and I do have a clear opinion on it that I can summarize in a few senctences:
The introduction of the Euro has been a political decision (many economists have warned of it in advance) and in my opinion, it has been a mistake. Well, such judgements with hindsight are not of value to anybody. The Euro is our currency now and whether the monetary union remains the way it is or whether one country leaves it – there is no easy way out solving the problem(s). Greece would benefit from having a currency on ist own, as monetary policy could be conducted on a national level. The instrument of adjusting exchange rates is an important one, an in this case, a devaluation would be natural and help the country. The technical execution of the exit of a monetary union however is highly complex (simply thinking of all the machines that are programmed on the Euro currency) and it won’t run smoothly and peacefully. I would not want to change with the politicians taking responsibilty for an exit decision or the policemen / military trying to prevent bankruns. All this wouldn’t be funny, but I claim: better a terrible end than unending terror. Because it won’t go on forever the way that things have been handled during the last years. And what worries and annoys me most is the following: I am an enthusiastic proponent of the European Union. We have been living in peace in Europe during the last years. The situation has been looking quite a bit different around 60 years ago. For me, this is the biggest accomplishment. And therefore I don’t understand the argument „if you leave the monetary union, you leave the European Union and Europe“. If the case of the exit of a nation of the monetary union has not been clarified legally, this should be changed quickly. In order to maintain peace, cooperation and the union in Europe. And where common regulations (no matter if it is the currency or other common laws) lead to resentment and anger between the nations, they are not necessary. And despite the fact that the way out of the monetary union is not an easy one, maybe it should be gone soon. In order to have peace in Europe, as well in the future.
